is offensive. >> would you have protected ambassador stevens? special report, investigations, death and deceit in benghazi. from washington, d.c., here is bret baier. >> it looked like this election was all about the economy, but that changed when terrorists murdered four americans at the united states consulate in benghazi on the anniversary of 9/11. americans had questions. who did this and how? should our government have seen it coming? did president obama tried to hide the truth? is this a huge scandal that exposes a failed obama foreign policy? is mitt romney just saying it is. tonight we'll try to give you answers. we'll walk you step by step through the terror of that day and break down the political maneuvering that has followed. we begin with a series of frightening developments and troubling decisions leading up to that horrific night. it's a story you haven't heard. it's told by a man who tried to prevent what happened on september 11th, 2012. >> did you have a close relationship with the ambassador? >> i lived and worked with him for two months when he came on to the time i left, y
stevens and three other americans were killed in the attack in benghazi last month. today elizabeth palmer made it inside the room where the ambassador died. >> reporter: the u.s. compound in benghazi now sits empty and abandoned. if the men who attacked these buildings on september 11 used heavy weapons, there are few signs of it. but over every window there's evidence of the billowing smoke that killed two americans, including ambassador chris stevens. inside post-it notes cling to the blackened wall, left behind by f.b.i. investigators who finally made it to this crime scene for a single day last week. cell phone video from the night of the attack shows the fire burning as looters swarmed over the compound. now a blanket of soot covers the ruins. but investigators will have been looking closely for evidence to show who set the blaze. this heavy steel security gate seals the sleeping quarters behind me off from the rest of the consulate building. it's double-locked from the inside, probably by the people who took refuge in here that night. among them, ambassador chris stevens. the space

. they found another window grill open. this is the window that special agent opened and crawls out of. stevens and smith did not crawl after him. even though he can barely see and barely breathe he goes back in, goes back in several times. he can't find them. he is overcome with smoke. >> he struggles up a small ladder to the roof of the building and collapses and radios the other agents. another a little emerges from the a tactical operation center and moves to the small agent and get them out. they get into a armored vehicle and drive to a short distance to the residence. they crawl into the residence on their hands and knees feeling their way through the building to try to find their two colleagues. they find smith. they pull him out of the building. these is dead. now, remember, the crack site security team is gone but there is small unit of security a mile away. six americans and 16 from the militia arrive. they surround the compound but they are unable to find stevens and libyan forces say they can't hold the perimeter. the agents carry the body and exit the main gate. they head for the
in the u.s. air force. he leaves behind a widow and two young children. ambassador chris stevens, a man i had known personally during his tours, u.s. ambassador to libya, ventured into a volatile and dangerous situation as libyans revolted against the longtime khaddafi regime. he did so because he believed the people of libya wanted and deserved the same things we have, freedom from tyranny. we join here today expressing from this side of the desk our deepest sympathy for the loss of life of the families in libya. additionally, other americans were injured in this terrorist attack. some suffering very serious injuries. i spoke to the father of one american who is recovering in the united states military hospital. he hopefully will have a full recovery, but he has gone through supplemental surgeries that will require a long recuperation and long reconstruction. mr. davis state department began a process of coming clean about what occurred in benghazi -- yesterday the state department began the process. they issued a broad and definitive statement, headed by ambassador kennedy, and they mad

chris stevens. the most important take away, there were no protests in front of the consulate before the attacks ever. directly contradicting the story given by susan rice three weeks ago. here's the timeline as we know it from the state department. at 8:30 p.m. local, the streets are calm as ambassador stevens says good night to a viz siing turkish diplomat. answer agent sees a large number of men flowing into the compound and immediately puts out on alarm. a security act hustles the ambassador and others to a bunker inside the residence. the attackers then spray diesel newly igniting the building, trapping the men inside, unable to see or breathe through the heavy smoke. they now know that one security agent escapes through a window. later the american security detail finds the body of shaun smith who died of smoke inhalation, but is unable to locate ambassador stevens and in fact does not find him until his body turns up hours later in a hospital after the staff there dials numbers on ambassador stevens' cell phone to identify him. survivors escape in an armored vehicle through he
